End of Summer Home Maintenance Ideas for Your Home

Shorter days, cooler nights and back-to-school sales mean summer is quickly ending. Before fall hits, here are some things to do to prepare for the cooler weather to come.
Inspect the exterior – The summer heat can wreak havoc on your home. Check the exterior for peeling and other signs of weather damage. Peeling paint should be dealt with immediately as it signifies the coat is no longer protecting the siding. Also, check for cracks in the wood – including doors and doorframes. Inspect the roof – Rain and humidity can cause a lot of damage to a roof, especially an older roof that hasn’t been maintained properly. Inspect it for weather damage and missing or loose shingles. A leak in your roof can cause water damage, compromising the structure and electrical system of the home. Clean the gutters – Now is a great time to remove the leaves and debris heading into fall. Clogged and overflowing gutters can lead to expensive repair and damage if not regularly cleared.  Caulk around windows – Sealing the windows from cracks and gaps is an easy way to save on utilities and prevent water/mold damage.  Replace air filters – Replacing air filters for your heating/cooling system will boost efficiency and help save you money. This should be done seasonally, especially if you have someone who suffers from allergies.
